Litter box Logic according to the Rabbit

Six reasons why rabbits stop using their litter boxes

1) Boxes are not emptied enough (daily).

2) Boxes are in locations that makes the rabbit feel uncomfortable.

3) Rabbit does not like the litter type (feel or smell). Rabbits like to eat hay while using their litter box.

4) Rabbit has an undiagnosed infection or other medical problem.

5) The box is too old and needs replacing. Odors are absorbed into the plastic.

6) The box was cleaned with a chemical cleanser that left an aversive smell instead of dish soap and hot water.

Would you like to use a toilet that isn't flushed?  Most rabbits prefer a clean litter box.

For two-story homes, prevent your rabbit from getting side-tracked and not making it to the litter box in time, by providing a back up litter box on a second floor. More than one litter box in a large home also makes using the litter box more convenient. For multiple rabbits, the rule of thumb is to provide one (or more) litter box per rabbit.

Rabbits are individuals. Just like some people like rap music and others prefer classical, rabbits have personal preferences. Try different types of litter boxes and different types of litters. Put the litter box where your rabbit chooses to eliminate.

Many rabbits value their privacy.  Do not place litter boxes in high traffic locations. Would you feel relaxed using a public toilet if there were no stall doors provided?
