Of
all the creatures you
may have as a Pet, the
rabbit has some of the
most interesting methods
of communicating with
others. Through a wide
variety of vocalizations
and body languages, your
rabbit will be able to
tell you how he or she
is feeling in just a
short time.
Let's go over a few of
the many ways your
rabbit will communicate
with you over the course
of their life:
1. Thumping
There is a reason so
many bunnies are named
Thumper! Typical
thumping is simply your
rabbit's way of warning
others of impending
perceived danger.
Usually, it is shocking
at first when you hear
your bunny make a thump
as they are very good at
making quite a loud
sound. Thumping can also
be a sign of displeasure
or anger. Either way,
your bunny wants you to
know of his unhappiness.
Constant thumping should
be addressed as your
rabbit could suffer
physical ailments from
the continued physical
exertion.
2. Teeth
Grinding The
sweet sound of lightly
grinding teeth from your
bunny means they are
happy and content. Often
times their eyes will
slowly drift closed as
they continue their
happy purring.
3. Grunts,
Growls, and Snorts
All are warning signals
to whatever may be
bothering your rabbit.
While it is rare for a
rabbit to bite, be
assured, once you hear a
grunt, growl, or snort,
a bite may not be far
behind.
4. Chin rubbing
The chin of your rabbit
it home to scent glands
which are used to mark
territory. A quick chin
rub deposits some of
that scent (which is
undetectable to humans)
onto the object of
possession to let others
know to whom it belongs.
5.
Licking While
it may seem that you
have something salty or
sugary on your hand,
odds are good that your
bunny is showing
affection.
6. Sitting on
hind legs Your
rabbit is curious and
trying to assess the
situation. Bunnies are
curious creatures and
standing on their hind
legs is a way to get a
head up on whatever may
be going on around them.
7.
Jumping Jack Rabbit
Your rabbit may
exhibit what is known as
a "binky". A move that
is hard to miss, you
will definitely know
when you see it. Your
bunny will jump up,
twist their body in
opposite directions, and
fall back down to the
ground. This is the
ultimate in happy bunny
moves! You will not see
this from all rabbits
and some do it more
often than others but it
is one of those tricks
that will make you melt
when you see it.
Dr. Rolan Tripp coined the phrase, "Positive Human Leadership" to mean providing Pets an environment where nothing bad, scary, or painful happens. A relaxed, comfortable body position from you will show your Pet that all is well. Avoid raising your voice or getting upset with your new Pet.
When it comes to
body language, your
rabbit has a couple of
neat tricks up their
sleeves when compared to
other Pets. Pay
attention to the body
language and occasional
sounds your rabbit is
providing. You will soon
know exactly how your
bunny is feeling!
