Week 5 - OFF, SIT-STAY, DOWN-STAY

  • Check health requirements for any new puppies who arrive

Review Puppy Class Rules

Puppy Party, and Socialization –– 10

  • People: positive interactions with any puppy
  • Demo: Each puppy and owner demonstrate DOWN-STAY.  Get feedback from trainer
  • Interrupt any unwanted behaviors and redirect the dog towards another dog.

Lessons - 10 min. 

  1. SIT-STAY, DOWN-STAY (goal is 15 seconds +)

                    i.  Ask the puppy to lie down.

                   ii.  As soon as the pup's front legs touches the ground, put the palm of your left hand toward the pup, as you stare, lean toward him and say STAY in a commanding tone.

                   iii.  Do not move for 2 seconds, then, call the pup out of the down position. Use a Release Word. [4]

                   iv.  Repeat.  Gradually increase the length of the stay.

                    v.  If the puppy looks like it will break the stay, say STAY in a deep tone of voice, lean toward the pup and stare.

                    vi.  When your dog can reliably stay for 30 seconds you may start adding in movement, then add distance, and then distractions.

 

    1. BANG -- (or “Sleep”) = roll onto side and stay

                    i.  Wiggle a treat in front of your dog's nose, then move it back over her head and down to the floor so that her head rolls back and to the floor. 

                    ii.  Keep your dog's head and legs flat on the floor by holding a treat close to the ground in front of her head. 

                    iii.  Say OFF if she tries to grab the treat. 

                    iv.  With practice, you'll be able to give the cute hand signal, or say BANG, to a get a chuckle from your friends. Hand signal: Make a "gun" with your hand.

Gentle Handling Exercises - 20

Pass the Puppy – 10 min

     During pass the puppy discuss handling exercises for people with children. “Child Proofing” the puppy to prevent it from getting upset if it is handled roughly or caught by surprise.  Gently touch, pet, stroke, pull hair, tail, collar or ears while giving the food or toy.  Gradually increase the intensity of touching, pulling, pushing, patting and grasping different areas of the body.  Immediately follow each grab with a treat if the dog responds acceptably.
 

  • Cooperative flea search (no struggling)
  • Foot cleaning and massage
  • Nail trimming and filing, styptic use [2]

Topics 5-10 min 

  • Preventing food bowl aggression:  Food Bowl Exercises  (Do this at home between classes)

                   i.  Don't sit food bowl down and ignore pup while it eats.

                  ii.  Food bowl handling  (Teach that the hand is coming to give, not take away)

                  iii.  Walk by the pup while it is eating and drop a treat into the food bowl.

                  iv.  Reach down toward the bowl and put a food treat in it.

                   v.  Place the bowl in your lap or on the floor in front of you.  Feed the puppy.  Handle the food.  Act jolly

                   vi.  Take the bowl away.  Put in a food treat. Give it back.

                  vii.  Touch the pup while putting in a food treat.

  • Review appropriate toys: Sharing toys prevents possessive aggression

                    i.  Pressed rawhide [3]

                   ii.  Kong toys
 

Homework

Gentling Exercises, Review all vocabulary.  Practice OFF, SIT-STAY, DOWN-STAY.

Food bowl; 3-minute non-visual separation; massage time during puppy meals

[4] A release word is repeatedly used to let your dog know it is ok to get up and move about.  It releases them from that command.  Examples of release words:  all done, o.k., release, free.
