Week 2 – Teaching WATCH, OFF

  • Check health requirements for any new puppies who arrive

Review Puppy Class Rules

Puppy Party, and Socialization –– 10 min

  • SIT and COME from play for a treat, release back to play as an added reward.
     

  • SIT and DOWN for a treat and release back to play
     

  • Remember the purpose of the puppy party is to help expand their normal comfort zone.  We want to increase the confidence of the shy dogs and decrease the confidence of the alpha dogs, bringing them to a center point.  So people be boring! 

Interrupt any unwanted behaviors and redirect the dog towards another dog.

  • If the dog repeats the behavior again pick-up the dog, put in the lap for a time out, and then move him redirecting towards another dog. 
     
  • If occurs again dog takes a time out in owners lap for duration of the play session. 

    If repeats again puppy is put in time out on owner lap for duration of class or in a kennel in the back and recommend a consult with a behaviorist prior to attending another class.

Lessons - 10 min.

  • WATCH – Builds concentration; intelligence

    Dogs on Leash (in listening position)

    Demo (then go around the room to help people individually.

  • Use the food lure, and pull it from the pup’s nose up to your eye,

  • Praise the puppy for watching the food lure. 

  • Make a “Beeline” from your eye to the puppy’s mouth.

  • Gradually move the food away, but only praise looking at your eyes. 
    This teaches the dog to pay attention for commands.

  • Each pup and owner demonstrate COME, SIT, DOWN. Get feedback from trainer. 
Gentle Handling Exercises - 20 min
  1. Fitting the Gentle Leader
    Demonstrate how to use treats as a positive Introduction, on one puppy in the class
     
  2. Puppy Exam, Handling the mouth, ears, and paws Goals:
  • to prevent Confusion and fear in the adult personality and to teach the puppy to tolerate and enjoy human handling.
  • Accustom the pet to accept handling that you, your veterinarian or groomer might do.
  • Begin by only working with the puppy when it is calm.

  • Inspect its ears, mouth, paws, belly and haircoat and under the tail.

  • Initially, only interact for a few seconds and end with praise or food in exchange for cooperation.

  • Learn the pup's reaction and always stop before the pup stops you.

  • Frequently repeat the exercises, gradually lengthening the interaction time.

  • Always praise the pup whenever it doesn't resist handling.  Goal is a rag doll response.

Progress slowly enough to avoid eliciting resistance, mouthing, aggression or anxious behaviors. 

  1. Review Gentling; give cookies in exchange for
  • Cheek and tooth rubbing
  • Full body massage – prep. for grooming
  • Soft/Pin Brush and Flea comb use [3]
  1. Pass the Puppy (with food treats): “Puppy Cuddle” --10 min
  • The goal is to develop a friendly, confident adult personality.

  • The first goal is introductions.  Each person have their own dog in a SIT STAY position and Then personally greet the other person (shake hands) and pet the other dog. 

  • Then use SAY HI as the code to allow your dog to greet the other person and/or dog. 

  • It is recommended this password be used all during the dog’s life during introductions.

Avoid fear: Look for relaxed posture.  Test with acceptance of food.  If accepting food, then increase handling

  • Handling and touching by every member of the class

  • Gently move the limbs and head, and praise and food treats for complying with gentle manipulation

  • When instructed, pass your puppy to the left, and start over with a new pup. 

  • Go slowly.  Give treats.  If the pup becomes too stressed, just hold it until it relaxes, give a break, then start over.

  • Sit still (for a cookie) on the Vet’s scale
  • Puppy Biting
  • Sit-Stay for a friendly stranger; SAY HI

Homework: SIT-STAY; Bring teeth cleaning tools next class, or purchase then
