The Importance of Decreasing Stress in Cats

Stress Defined:  "The difference between what is, and how we think it should be."

Cats show abnormal behaviors as a result of stress, as every creature does.  Symptoms of how cats show stress are:

  • Overeating
  • Not eating
  • Displaced grooming
  • Inappropriate urination or defecation
  • Aggression

Examples of stress in a cat's life:

  • Fleas or any medical condition
  • New cat seen in the neighborhood
  • New cat heard in the neighborhood
  • New cat seen in the neighborhood
  • Change or work schedule of people
  • New baby
  • New or rearranged furniture
  • New scent in the house
  • Someone raised their voice in the last 4 hours
  • Insufficient opportunity to exercise
Stress in cats similar to stress in humans increases both physical and behavioral abnormalities and decreases overall health and well-being.  Take action to understand and lower your cat's stress!

Things which tend to lower stress in a cat's life are:

  • Routine
  • Fewer other cats competing for resources
  • Grooming
  • Exercise
  • Excellent medical condition (no pain or parasites)
