10 Simple
Steps for Teaching Your Puppy to
Come when Called!
Follow
these simple steps and
your puppy will always
come
when you call. This is
one of the first steps
to
raising an IdealDog™
-
When you say "come,"
as soon as the puppy
looks at you,
begin praising,
"good puppy!"
Praise encourages
the puppy to come
even faster.
-
Standing can look
threatening to a
puppy. When you
call, crouch with
open arms and
have a friendly face. You want
the puppy to expect
a friendly greeting.
-
Never call, "come"
in an angry tone.
Begin with an
assertive call, then
switch to
high-pitch happy
praise until the
puppy gets to you.
-
Never punish
or scold your
dog when he finally
gets to you, NO
MATTER WHAT
HE HAS DONE. If you
punish
or scold the dog, he
will think that you
are punishing
him for coming.
-
When the puppy comes
to you, gently
hold his
collar and give
him a treat.
Then release
the puppy instantly
and say "okay" or
"free".
-
Never chase your
puppy. Instead have
him chase you.
Never say
"come" if you know
that the puppy is
too distracted.
-
Get your
puppies
attention first by
clapping your hands
or saying "hey" and
then
call him to you.
-
If you say, "come"
and the puppy
ignores you, run in
the opposite
direction
from your puppy and
as you say "hey
puppy," clap your
hands to get the
puppy to chase you.
-
Call your puppy to
do fun things, not
for things that
the puppy won't
like.
-
When you start
teaching the "come"
Instruction, don't worry
about having
the puppy sit
perfectly in front
of you.
