Getting Started Week 26 - Puppy Frenzy

When your puppy races around the room and appears to have lost all contact with planet earth, you are witnessing "puppy frenzy."  This typically occurs at the end of the day after your pup has slept most of the day away. This is a boomerang effect for the dog who has been alone and not had any exercise.

Warning:  Do NOT try to train or teach your dog anything at this time. Wait it out. This is a great time to take your dog for an exhausting run or walk on leash off your property. Dogs need the mental stimulation of new sights, scents, and sounds.

If your puppy bites at your ankles or does other unacceptable behaviors you may need to leave the room to give your puppy a "time out" to cool his/her jets. Do NOT scold. This is normal, happy puppy behavior. Scolding does not make sense to your puppy at this time.

Sometimes, you can join your pup's play by tossing toys, or patting your puppy's sides as you hold the toy your puppy has in his or her mouth.  Do not try to take the toy away. Instead, pull your puppy over to another toy and throw that one.

If your puppy is prone to frenzy, increase companionship, exercise and play to channel this youthful energy into more acceptable outlets.
