Getting Started Day Five - Teach NOT punish or preach...

One key to error-free puppy raising is preventing bad habits AND teaching good ones. Ask yourself, "If this is wrong (a behavior I don't want), what is right (a behavior I do want)?"

The easiest way to teach good behavior is through 100% supervision - while following a routine that meets Puppy's basic canine needs - and showing Puppy exactly what you want in a way that makes sense to Puppy.

Learn as much as YOU can during this time, and keep ALL learning FUN for both of you. You don't get a second chance to make a first good impression.  Here are two common mistake people make with new puppies.

1.  They physically punish the pup and think the pup understands why - making it hard for the pup to trust them and learn from them. They lose their tempers and show anger which is ineffective teaching and doesn't work.

2.  They try to raise the pup using common sense and street smarts as if this canine is a human child.
