Getting Started Day Ten - Huh?

You can teach your dog an English vocabulary if your are patient, and understand that dogs learn in different ways than people, then adjust your teaching methods.  See our topic on the Border Collie that learned over 200 words!

1.  Don't say, "Down" if your puppy is jumping on you. Say, "Off". The word, down should ALWAYS mean, the "down" position you teach in obedience classes.

2.  Don't say, "Stay" unless you want your dog to freeze in that position until you release the dog or request a new position. When you leave home or the car, say "Wait" instead.

3.  Don't say, "No" when the dog is barking. Barking is a normal behavior that will never stop completely. Instead, say, "Quiet" which means stop barking now.
