Puppy Class Goals
- to socialize the
puppy to people, things and other
dogs.
-
to take behaviors that dogs do
anyway, (like sitting, coming
and laying down) and teach the dog to do
these behaviors on cue.
- to
teach basic manners necessary to
be an ideal indoor dog and best friend.
-
to actively look for and
praise desired behaviors like laying
quietly and gentle play.
(Most people mistakenly
ignore these, and only give attention
when something is wrong. This is
why most puppies think their name
is “NO.”)

Puppy Class Rules
Puppy Party,
and Socialization –– 10 min
Socialization is
the process of developing friendly
confidence meeting other dogs and
people. It should occur between
6 to 18 weeks of age (when the puppy
has “puppy teeth”). The puppy should
be exposed to as many different
adults, children and situations
as possible under adequate supervision
to insure a pleasant experience.
Always ask the pup to sit for a
food treat every time it meets someone.
If the dog is only soliciting food
from people in class, ignore and
encourage a mix of play with dogs
and sitting for people. If a puppy
acts scared, you act “jolly.” Demonstrate
there is no reason for concern.
Shy puppies should not be pushed
into doing anything they don't want
to do. It is very important that
they are socialized, but they must
do it as their own speed. Don't
soothe or console the pup when it
acts fearful or you will reward
the fearful behavior and make the
pup overly dependent upon you. Praise
any posture or movement toward a
social experience
- People, be
boring! (Turn away)

Gentle Handling Exercises
Handle safely: Don’t drop the pup, and don’t let
it bite you.
Avoid fear: Smile and talk high and happy.
If the pup panics, just put it down.
Suspension:
This is a way of exhibiting
situational and visual control
over your puppy. Remember the
best time to do this is when
greeting or showing affection
or when you are responding to
puppy biting and puppy frenzy.
Only suspend until your puppy
looks away, and then go to the
next step.
Hugging:
This exhibits physical
control
over your puppy. This is only
done for about 5 seconds, gently
holding against your chest.
Then proceed to next step.
Cradling:
This exhibits positional
control.
Again, this should be done for
about 5 seconds. (Demonstrate
suspension, hugging, cradling
and have owners do this technique
with their puppies)
When all of the
above steps are completed, immediately
give a cookie and praise them with
a jolly voice! Now we will review
stroking and massaging.
Stroking:
This touches the natural pressure
points that the mother uses to
calm or correct the puppies.
Massage: This is dermatome
stimulation. A dermatome is the
area of skin innervated by a single
spinal nerve. This exercise helps
stimulate nerve endings and will
help get them used to be touched
all over the body. It also builds
trust and bonding.
Topic
Never allow jumping up. Teach
SIT for greeting. Turn back and
completely ignore dog for jumping.
As the dog calms, give an
"instructive" reprimand, SIT. As
soon as the dog sits, quickly turn
and crouch to give the dog a
rewarding greeting. Put your thumb
under the collar to prevent the dog
from jumping at your face.
