Kennel Training Cats
Why kennel train a cat?
Cats can learn to adopt a
kennel (also called a crate)
as a safe, comfy resting
area. If your cat feels safe
in the kennel, it will be
less traumatic to travel
inside the kennel by car or
plane.

Do NOT make the only time that your cat is in the kennel associated with long
car rides or trips that result in undesirable destinations such as veterinary
treatments, long term kenneling or baths.

to do
-
Choose a kennel
that's large
enough for your cat to
stand up, lay down, and
turn around
comfortably.
Find a location that
appeals to your cat.
Cats like to have places
to hide. Place
irresistible, extra
comfy bedding inside the
kennel.
Make the kennel a
place where your cat
finds treats, food, and
toys.
Praise your cat and give
lots of loving attention
when he/she chooses to
be in the kennel.
Close the kennel door during
feeding after your cat will go
in and out of the kennel at
will. When the kitten is
comfortable resting in the
kennel, latch the door overnight
for the first time when the cat
is likely to sleep anyway.
Praise lavishly when you close
the door.
