Getting
Started - Early socialization
One of the most common errors
people make with a new kitten is isolating that adorable
little being at home instead of proactively shaping the adult
cat personality when it's easiest on kitten and cat parent.
During your
kitten's early socialization period, your mission as a positive
cat parent is to make a
checklist of every person, pet, place or thing you want to
introduce to your kitten as a positive part of life with
you.
Make sure your checklist includes all ages of people, cat
toys, vacuums and other household appliances and objects,
kennels, collars, harnesses, baths, grooming tools. Then develop
a strategy and use your checklist daily.
Your
goal:
Teach your
kitten to relax and accept new experiences without fear, and
protect your kitten
from fear and pain during the sensitive learning
period from 3 to 8 weeks of age.
This
week: Pretend to give your
kitten a thorough veterinary exam. Create a positive experience
with sweet talk,
treats, and finding your kitten's favorite
spots to finger tickle.
