Sample Positive Dog Parenting Lesson on preventing food bowl aggression!

Who Paid For That Food, Anyway?

Does your dog remind you of the toddler that grabs everything and says, "Mine, mine, MINE!"

Then remember this mantra, "Learn to earn."

Your dog needs to begin to earn all valued food, toys, and other privileges. An unemployed dog is an unhappy and confused dog. Your dog needs mental exercise and learning is a great way to earn everything he or she wants.

Dogs with food-related aggression often guard food, toys, bedding and will resist being moved by other pets, even people!

What does food bowl aggression look like?

Dogs guard food by sneering, growling, snapping, lunging, even attacking pets and people who get too close.

Children are most likely to be bitten in the presence of food, bones, and other dog-treasured possessions

Games to Play
Games make training time fun for the entire family. The following games can help PREVENT food bowl aggression.
"Quick sit" for Food
See how quickly your dog will sit before you put down the food bowl. If this takes 10 seconds today, go for 9 seconds tomorrow.

Patience is a virtue, teach your dog to "wait."
This game may take a partner to hold your dog on leash while you put a treat or food bowl down, give a hand signal and verbal, "Wait" or "Stay."

Count to 5, then say, "take it" or "okay" and let your dog approach the food bowl or treat. Increase the number of seconds of waiting or "stay" each week.

Treat Toss
While your dog is eating, toss an extra tasty treat into the bowl. After your dog begins to expect tasty treats during dinner time, call your dog away from the bowl and offer a treat.

NEVER physically punish aggression.  Responding to aggression with aggression only increases the aggression. Instead, teach your dog to do what is right!
