Dogs
On Furniture
What
Is It?

The dog rests on furniture when
and where
this is not permitted.
What
Causes It?
Lack of training
People enjoying small dogs close
to them
Overbearing personality
It's comfortable
Who
Does It?
Every dog would like to
rest in high status, comfortable
places. Those that do get on the
furniture are either allowed to,
untrained to refrain from doing
it, or testing their ability to
control the favorite resting spots. Cats
do this as well, but most people
allow cats on furniture. If
not, use the same ideas as for
dogs.
When
Does It Happen?
This behavior usually starts
when the owner is gone. If allowed,
the dog will claim this as his
"right" because
he thinks his status deserves
it.
|
If
the dog is a puppy, teach
him the rules you expect
an adult dog to obey. E.g.,
allow the puppy in your
lap on the floor, but not
in your lap sitting on the
furniture, and not jumping
or resting on the furniture. |
How
Can I Stop It?
-
If the dog is seen on furniture,
correct him (say," Off!)
immediately. Use a gruff
tone to get your message
across. If needed coax
the dog off, then praise.
-
Provide your pet a very comfortable
dog bed.
Praise the dog whenever he
is lying in his own bed.
-
When you're away from
home or unable to watch the
dog (sleeping, etc.):
-
Try using a rug runner,
with pointed side up,
on the furniture.
-
Put aluminum foil on the
furniture. Dogs don't
like it.
-
Another option is a mild electric
shock from a pad. An example
is the "Scat Mat®,"
available at 800-767-8658;
or the "Sofa Saver®,"
at 212-840-2570.
Other
Comments
-
As a family, determine your
house rules. Decide whether or not the
pet is allowed on the furniture.
- Be
consistent! Avoid one person
in the family inviting the
animal up on the furniture;
another person punishing the
dog for the same behavior.
- Never
allow a dog with an
overbearing or aggressive
personality to rest on the
furniture. Sharing a favored
spot increases the dog's
impression of his or her status.
-
If you like the dog on your
lap, consider getting on the floor
with the dog instead of inviting the dog
up on the sofa.
