Getting Started Week Twenty - Socializing Dogs to Cats

If you have both dogs and cats in your home, it is best to introduce the newest member of the family (cat or dog) slowly and with positive associations. Praise curious, friendly behavior and offer both treats.

If you see your dog even thinking of chasing the cat, interrupt with a vocal, "Ah-ah" or "Off" Instruction. It's easier to stop a chase before the dog is highly aroused by it. If the dog responds to your interruption, use a clicker or effusive verbal praise to immediately reinforce a correct response, followed by a very special food treat, saved just for this challenging lesson.

Have your dog drag a long leash in the house - 10 to 50 feet long - if you think you may need to back up your verbal interruption with a grab on the leash to stop the chase.
