Getting Started Week 24 - Rub-a-dub-dub, Bath Time!

Bath time can be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your puppy if you start out right and go slowly. The goal is for your puppy to love being bathed so that it is easier and more fun for both of you!

Introduce your puppy to an empty sink or tub. Lure your puppy in and out with a treat. (Always introduce new things when your puppy is very hungry.) Praise every little movement closer to getting in and out. Do not force the issue. Act happy. Use a ball or toy if that helps.

When your puppy catches on, add a cue word like "bath time" and a unique hand signal for getting in the tub. Give your pup a "dry" bath first. Go through all the motions - a massage, towel rub without the water.

When your puppy is relaxed about the bathing area, then turn the water on and off quickly and give your puppy a treat. Get the idea?  Ease into the experience. While your puppy is being bathed pour out juicy loving. End every bath time with a very special treat.

If you have difficulties with this exercise or if any other behaviors, consider calling 1-800-372-3702 to learn about behavior modification programs that can give you more customized help.
